Helmholtz Lecture Anil Seth, November 8: Consciousness in humans and in other things
Helmholtz lecture Anil Seth (Department of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience, University of Sussex)
Title: Consciousness in humans and in other things
Abstract: Anil Seth is the author of the popular scientific book “Being You: A New Science of Consciousness” (2022), which was named Book of the Year by The Guardian, The Economist, and The Financial Times. Since 2019, he is among the list of globally most cited academics (Clarivate Analytics) and he became well-known tot he general public through his appearances on the BBC and a TED talk with over 10 million views. Seth is a Professor at the University of Sussex and Director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science.
Seth argues that our perception of the world is a creation of our brains – a ‘controlled hallucination’. Even our sense of identity is a mental construct. How does this change the way we see ourselves and other people, animals, and even artificial intelligence? Can AI systems develop consciousness, or have they already? Seth offers a novel perspective on consciousness and challenges you to rethink your understanding of reality.
Location: Ruppert building room Blauw (Blue), Leuvenlaan 21 3584 CE Utrecht
